Polaroid film might be going away forever, but there is no doubt that it will still crop up in movies and will forever appear in advertising. God, I hate those fake Polaroids that are used on so many print ads and websites.

As this small sampling of Polaroids in the Movies suggests, Polaroids work hand in hand with sex and violence. Just look:

This Polaroid appears in David Cronenberg’s Crash as leftover debris in a smashed-up car. It is certainly in good company next to the awesomely titled pulp trash book, Fistful of Bimbos! Read the rest of this entry »

Leave it to the Japanese to make this outrageous horror movie. With hardly even a drop of blood, it still manages to be extremely disgusting..and all because of hair.

I had to unclog a bathroom drain once and I really nearly vomitted when I finally saw the big mucousy ball of hair that was clogging the pipe. Even a piece of hair on a bar of soap is enough to make me want to carve it off with a knife, just to be rid of it. Read the rest of this entry »

Lady Street Fighter is a forgotten gem for lovers of trash cinema. Every scene offers something special in the form of dialogue, wardrobe or head-shaking bewilderment. Just take a look at a few of these film stills from this anti-classic.

Lost in Translation. I don’t think she got the “How To” Phone Sex memo.

She is so awesome for getting through airport security wearing this studded to death outfit. Read the rest of this entry »

Normally, I steer very clear from romantic gay comedies. I’ve only ever seen one or two…I should add that I don’t typically watch straight romantic comedies either…there’s just usually not enough blood in either variety. But somehow this movie Adam and Steve found its way to the top of my Netflix queue and I actually liked most of it.

It started out kind of like a hybrid of Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion and Flirting With Disaster..and Parker Posey is FAT in it..so that was cool. The highlight however was a dance scene with one of the funniest songs I’ve heard in a while sung by Jackie Beat, “Shit Happens”. Thank God, for that. I want this mp3 if anyone has it!

The one thing I regret about the nearly ten years of living in New York City was that I didn’t use my camera very much.  I moved to Manhattan in 1993 and by that time The Deuce (42nd St) was already  dying.   All the theaters up and down  42nd St. were still there, but most of them were closed for business.

I think it was 1994 that a public art show went up and all of the theater marquees were used to display haikus written by different people…I didn’t even get a photo of that! For shame. But…

All my research on Wilma Martinez is paying off. There is no documentation of her film work, yet I am finding a good amount of proof that she worked quite a bit during the 70s.

In this microfilm printout, she is seen advertising a film called “I, Mistress” which played at the Circus Cinema in Manhattan. I’m led to believe that she actually starred in it since she appears in the ad, but since her name is not listed, I am not totally sure and this is the only ad I could find. Below is the ad as it appeared in print.

I love early 70s exploitation movies that take place in San Francisco and New York City. No matter how low the production values are or how painful the acting is, they are always an interesting document. A glimpse of either city during the booming porn years is always amazing and The Meatrack (1970), shot in San Francisco, truly delivers.

Great trailers that are better than the actual films that they advertise are high art in my book. I love movie trailers…especially horror, exploitation and most of all, for films that don’t even exist. The trailers that were made for the Robert Rodriguez/Quentin Tarantino double-feature “Grindhouse” were brilliant little nuggets of trash. The film tanked, but I gotta hand it to RR/QT, they really did it right and their marketing was flawless. Too bad nobody got it.

I finally just watched Tropic Thunder and thought it was one long joke that couldn’t sustain itself, but the fake intro trailers were great and worth the rental. Check out a few stills from “The Fatties Fart 2” — America’s Favorite Obese Family starring Jack Black aka Jeff Portnoy. Read the rest of this entry »

If the world only knew that all the men on Gilligan’s Island were parading around their uncharted island in drag I’m sure they would have been rescued much sooner. The Skipper is HOT!

As a kid it always bothered me that the castaways had so many fucking clothes with them when they were only going on a 3-hour tour, but I’m certainly glad they brought wigs and all their drag finery.

I’ve been a long time fan of the film Targets and marvel at the ingenuity in which director Peter Bogdanovich put this film together. That is no big surprise when considering the fact that he was working under Roger Corman, Hollywood’s most loved penny pincher.

Titles appear over footage from The Terror. Read the rest of this entry »
